A CLEARER NEXT STEP

After the accident.Before the repair.

A general guide to organizing a collision claim and preparing for a conversation with the shop.

01

You can choose your repair shop.

In Pennsylvania, you have the right to select the repair shop. An insurer may suggest a facility, but you do not have to use that shop. Shop choice does not mean every quoted expense is automatically covered; ask the insurer to explain its appraisal and any amount you may owe.

02

Start with your insurer.

Report the incident and ask what documentation is needed. Keep your claim number and adjuster’s contact details together. Confirm which coverage applies, the deductible if any, and whether rental transportation is included before making arrangements.

03

Understand the estimate.

An initial appraisal may describe only visible damage. Additional damage discovered during repair can require a revised estimate or supplement. Discuss the repair scope, approvals and payment responsibilities before authorizing work.

04

Keep the conversation connected.

Ask who will communicate changes and how you will be informed. Coverage decisions belong to the insurer. Confirm the repair plan and timing with the shop separately, and keep copies of the documents you receive.

General information, not a coverage determination. See Pennsylvania’s appraisal standards (31 Pa. Code § 62.3) for state consumer guidance.
