NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA / PLAIN ANSWERS

How often should I change my oil?

Your owner’s manual sets your oil change interval, and 3,000 miles is outdated for many cars. What changes the schedule and what to bring.

Change oil on the schedule in your owner’s manual, not by a single mileage rule. California’s CalRecycle says the old 3,000-mile habit is outdated for most vehicles, and that many cars can go several thousand miles more between changes when the manufacturer allows it. Your manual can list a normal and a severe-service schedule. O’Hara and Sons Automotive offers oil changes and maintenance. Call (267) 995-0203, Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 6 PM.

Where do I find my interval?

Your owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s maintenance information. It lists the oil type and the interval by mileage or time, often with a separate schedule for hard use. Many newer cars also show a maintenance reminder on the dash.

What can shorten the interval?

Check whether your manual’s “severe” or “special” conditions apply:

  • Many short trips, especially in cold weather
  • Long idling or stop-and-go driving
  • Towing or heavy loads
  • Dusty or very hot conditions

What if I do not know when I last changed it?

Bring any receipt, sticker or note. If the history is unclear, say so, and ask the shop what to do rather than guess a date.

What should I check between changes?

Follow the owner’s manual on checking the oil level. A low level or a warning light needs attention. An oil-pressure warning can mean a serious problem. Stop safely and get help rather than treating it as a service reminder.

A LITTLE CLARITY

Good questions.Straight answers.

Still wondering about something? Call (267) 995-0203, Mon–Fri, 8 AM–6 PM.

Is 3,000 miles still right?

For many modern vehicles, no. CalRecycle calls it outdated for most. Your manual rules.

What kind of oil does my car need?

It depends on the engine and the manufacturer. The manual lists the specification. Bring your year, make and model to the shop.

Does driving habit matter more than miles?

It can. Short trips, idling and heavy loads can call for the manual’s severe-service schedule.

What if the oil light comes on?

Stop safely. An oil-pressure warning is not a routine reminder. See check engine light: solid vs flashing for other dash warnings.

Does O’Hara and Sons Automotive do oil changes?

Yes. See oil changes and maintenance and call (267) 995-0203.
